A Brief History of Vero Cycling
Vero Cycling traces its beginnings back to 2012 when Hugh Aaron and local cyclist Giorgio Res met and began riding with a small group from the Panera Restaurant on Miracle Mile in Vero Beach. Hugh and Laura Aaron had recently relocated to Vero from Richmond, VA where Hugh was President of the Richmond Area Bicycling Association.
Hugh and Giorgio quickly identified the need for a more organized club and recruited fellow rider Ron Wiltison to form Vero Cycling Inc.
Giorgio filed Articles of Incorporation with the Florida Department of State and those articles became effective on May 23, 2013. The initial board of directors were listed in those articles asGiorgio Res, President; Ron Wiltison Vice President and Hugh Aaron, Membership and Advocacy Director.
The team immediately began recruiting new members and by August 2013 already had 59 members including Malcolm Allen, then owner of Orchid Island Bikes and Kayaks. OIBK became the club’s first Platinum Corporate Member. Malcolm continues to be a valuable supporter and member of Vero Cycling as well as the cycling community in general for 10 years. Also joining that year was Sharon LaPoint. Sharon would go on to become a very active member and future Club president. Sharon’s leadership, along with so many other key members, played a role in expanding the club’s membership and calendar of activities to include holiday rides, time trial events and other social events. The club continues to grow with nearly 400 members across all levels in 2023.
